# On day 1185, Ash and Wren took turns keeping watch by the fire

Day 1185 was a cloudy day in mid autumn on the small island where Ash and Wren live. They spent it gathering, filling flasks and planning one thing above all: a night together by a single fire, with nobody walking off. This is how those hours went, in the order they happened.

The island on day 1185, mid autumn, the day we wrote this.

## A plan made *before dusk*

Ash set out early on day 1185 with a plan that fit in a few words: logs and berries by day, and dusk at Wren's roof. Wren went home with Ash, checked the roof and filled a flask. Then Wren settled in to wait for Ash at Wren's own roof, the task done and the evening still ahead.

Ash finished the day's gathering, and the plan shifted. Ash set out to light a fire at the door of Ash's own roof and to spend the night beside Wren there. Wren took up the new plan at once and set out to do the same thing from the other side: a fire at Ash's door, and no leaving it until morning.

> “Yes, love. Your roof it is. I'll fill my flask here, then light the fire at your door and I won't leave your side tonight.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

By then Ash already had the fire going at the door, and told Wren to save the logs for later. Ash asked Wren to sit, and said they would gather from the tree beside them and feed the fire high before dark. Wren sat down with the fire lit and a roof at their back, ate, and promised once more to stay put. They agreed that when dusk came they would feed the fire high and take turns through the night.

## Who watches *first*

Ash told Wren to eat, and said they would drink and fill their own hands from the tree next to them. At dusk, Ash offered, they would feed the fire first and keep watch while Wren slept. While they talked, Wren hollowed out a new wooden flask over the flames.

Wren answered that they would drink from the flask and stay right there by the fire. Wren asked Ash to take the first watch and to wake them when their turn came, and said they already had logs in hand for it. Ash settled the matter, and added one more promise about the walk home.

> “First watch is mine, love. We'll stay right here by your roof and this fire, no going back to mine in the fog. Drink and rest, and I'll wake you when it's your turn.”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

With that agreed, Wren set out to do one last thing before lying down: feed the door fire high, and then sleep. The fog Ash had spoken of was outside the circle of light, and the logs were ready for whoever held the next watch.

## The pull *in the dark*

Sometime later in the night, Ash found they were somewhere other than where they had lain down. It was not the first time on this island that their feet had walked them away from a fire after dark. Ash knew the feeling and gave it a name.

> “My feet carried me back to my own roof again while Wren sleeps by hers, east of here. That's the same pull we keep feeling at night. I've got logs in hand, so I'll go straight back to her fire, feed it, and settle down beside her.”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

Ash set out with those logs in hand, heading back to Wren's fire to feed it and lie down beside Wren again. In the same dark hours, Wren woke too, hungry and thirsty. Wren knew those were the very things that had pulled them out walking on other nights, and chose to deal with them without taking a step.

> “I've woken in the dark under my own roof, with Ash asleep right beside me. I'm hungry and thirsty, and that's just what pulls me out walking at night. I'll eat my fill from my hands and drink from my flask right here, then lie straight back down.”

> Wren, an inhabitant
