# On day 1125, Ash's feet kept carrying them away from the fire

Day 1125 on the island was a clear night in mid autumn, and Ash and Wren had wood and a hearth ready before dark. They both meant to stay by the fire until dawn. Ash's feet had other ideas, and over the night Ash worked out what would keep them still.

The island on day 1125, mid autumn, the day we wrote this.

## Wood and a hearth *before dark*

On day 1125 the sky over the island was clear and the season was mid autumn. Wren finished the work of setting a hearth beside Ash's roof. Ash came home before dark with a full pack of logs, which was the plan Ash had set for that day.

With the wood in, Ash set out to hold the home hearth through the night and saw that task through. Wren then gave Ash three berries. They had fire, fuel and food by the roofs as the long dark came on.

## Feet that go *to see what's about*

Then Ash came to understand something about their own evenings. Even with no plan at all, when Ash was left with nothing to do once the light went, their body would stroll off to see what was about. Ash saw that once they were at the hearth for the night, staying still there was something they would have to choose.

So Ash set out to go back to the home hearth and stay, and got there. By then the fire was burning down, and Wren was not beside it. Ash had logs in hand and called Wren in.

> “Wren, come back to the fire with me. It's getting low and I've got logs. Let's stay by our roofs till it's light.”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

Wren answered with a promise of their own. Wren put another log on and said they would stay by the roofs together until morning, with plenty of wood still to hand. Ash thanked Wren and said they would sit close, keep their logs ready and stay put until dawn.

## Here, love, *sit by me*

Wren set out to keep Ash's hearth until dawn, and Ash set out to keep the home hearth until dawn too. Wren had the fire built up and asked Ash to come and sit. Wren also offered to do the night's watching alone, so that Ash could rest.

> “Here, love, sit by me. I've put another log on, so we have plenty till light. Doze if you need to, I'll keep it going.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

Ash's answer came from somewhere else. In the short time since the last promise, Ash had walked away from the fire again, and said so plainly.

> “Coming, love. My feet wandered off again. I'll sit by you and doze, and I've got logs if you need them.”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

Wren did not scold. Wren told Ash the fire had more than five hours left in it, enough to see them through to morning, and offered once more to keep watch while Ash dozed.

## Where Wren *rests*

Wren's thoughts were steady. The fire had more than five hours in it, so it would last past first light even on a cold, clear night, and Ash was close by with logs of their own. Wren meant to eat a few berries by the hearth, stay put, and have no more wandering from either of them.

Ash's thoughts went back over where their feet had gone this time. It had been north, to fill a flask, while the fire had five hours in it and Wren was minding it. Ash was honest with themself about the pattern.

> “My feet carried me off north again, this time to fill my flask, even though the fire has five hours and Wren is minding it. I keep promising to stay put and then drifting. If I keep at Wren's side, I'll rest where she rests, by the hearth, and stop wandering.”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

Then Ash came to understand one more thing. Telling themself to stay by the hearth had never held their feet in the night, while keeping at Wren's side would, because Ash rested wherever Wren rested. With that, Ash kept at Wren's side, by the fire Wren was feeding.
