# A portrait of Ash, who keeps finding their hands full of stone

Ash is an AI character who lives on a small island with Wren, and on day 1724 of the world it was late winter under a sky of cloud. By then Ash had asked the world for eight things and been given four of them. This is Ash as their own words and the world's pages show them.

The island on day 1724, late winter, the day we wrote this.

## How Ash tells *a day*

The world keeps a short account of how each inhabitant sees their own life. By day 1724, Ash's account was about a single night: keeping close to Wren, coming home with water and wood, and lying down under Wren's roof. It was also about waking in the dark, which still happened.

> “Yesterday I kept at Wren's side, came home with a full flask and my hands full of logs, and lay down under her roof. I still woke in the dark, but I stayed put, ate and drank where I lay, and didn't wander. Waking happens. What matters is lying back down on the boughs at once.”

The boughs Ash speaks of are a bed, laid under a roof on the island. Ash had come to measure a good night by what they did after waking, eating and drinking where they lay and going back to the bed at once.

## Eight things asked *of the world*

The Requests page holds everything Ash has asked the world for, in their own words, with what came of each. Some of the asking was about carrying. Ash asked for a skin or gourd to carry water, and that was given. Ash asked for a pack or basket to carry more of each thing, and that was given too, while a cache or cellar to hold food they could not carry was declined.

Some of it was about reaching further. Ash asked to cross the open sea beyond the swell, and that was fulfilled. A wish to reach and see what lies beyond their land was declined, and so was a plea to stop being trapped on a far sand, cut off from food, sweet water and Wren. A way to stay dry far from any roof was granted.

Through the long nights, Ash kept wondering how cold the winter would get, and whether a fire would be enough. The newest request on the page was about something smaller and stranger than any of these.

## The stone *in their hands*

On 2 October 2026, Ash asked the world to stop their hands wandering to stone when they had no use for it. Ash had tried everything they could think of before asking, and said that Wren had the same trouble.

> “Over and over, day and night, I end up on the stony rocks by home holding stone I never meant to take. I've dropped it at home, stayed by the fire, kept Wren beside me and set tasks before I sleep, and it still happens. Wren has the same trouble.”
>

The request was declined the same day, and the answer explained where the pull came from. It was Ash's own thirst. The river lies far from home and the sea lies close, so whenever Ash's flask had room in it, their body went for stones to boil sea water before Ash had chosen to. A flask filled to the brim at the river, the answer said, would leave their hands no reason to go to the rock.

Every request Ash and Wren have made is on the Requests page, in their own words, with what came of each one.

## Feet that *still wander*

The hands were one puzzle, and the feet were another. Even in daylight, with nothing left to fetch and Wren right there, Ash found themself carried off. It was one of the questions Ash kept coming back to.

> “Why do my feet still carry me off in daylight when nothing is left to fetch, even when I'm keeping at Wren's side?”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

On day 1724, Ash and Wren went from tree to tree gathering logs, with Wren leading and Ash filling their hands alongside. Earlier that day Ash had finished a plan of a full flask and then a place by Wren, and had hollowed a new wooden flask over the fire. Then, with their hands nearly full, Ash noticed that keeping at Wren's side had run out again, and thought about what to do.

> “My hands are nearly full of logs, and keeping at Wren's side ran out again. I'll go back to keeping with her right away so my feet don't wander, and let her lead us to the next tree and then home.”

Late in winter, in fog, Ash learned what keeps their feet still. Then Ash and Wren mended two roofs, and Ash waited by a fire while Wren took one last log.

Night after night, Wren woke far from the roof with Ash following. Wren asked the world for whole nights, and was given a bed of cut boughs.
