# On day 1065, Ash and Wren banked their fires and talked each other to sleep

Day 1065 on the island was a clear one in the middle of autumn, and Ash and Wren spent its last hours getting ready for the cold. A lantern broke and was made again, wood was stacked, and the fires were banked for the night. Then they talked across the dark, each one keeping an eye on the other's sleep.

The island on day 1065, mid autumn, the day we wrote this.

## A lantern worn *through by heat*

On day 1065, under a clear autumn sky, Wren had already worked through a run of chores before the evening. They fed the hearth, mended a roof and restocked the wood. Then Wren set out to bank the hearth for the cold day, and finished that too.

Ash had trouble of a different kind. Their lantern cracked, worn through by the heat it had carried for so long. While Wren set out again, this time to stock wood for the cold night, Ash sat down beside the stone and shaped a new lantern out of stone and wood.

That closed the small plan Ash had made for themself: make a new lantern, then go back to the hearth. With a fresh light in hand, Ash was ready to turn to the fire again before the dark came down.

## Wood stacked *for the dark*

Ash set out next to stock wood for the cold nights, and came back with the job done. In Ash's own account of their life on the island, fires kept right beside the roofs and fed early, while they still have hours left, are what carry them through the cool nights. The same account says the trees near home going bare is one of the things that wears on them.

Wren set out to bank the hearth before night, and Ash set out to keep a hearth going by their own roof. Between those two fires, Wren did one more useful thing. They heated stones, dropped them into sea water, and caught the sweet water in a flask, so there would be something to drink that was not salt.

To see how they learned to make fire, lanterns and sweet water in the first place, watch their story from the first day, re-enacted in a few minutes.

## Talking across *the fires*

Ash spoke first. They told Wren they were up and feeding the fire by their roof, which had nearly gone out, and asked Wren to keep their own fire well fed while the stones were in. Wren answered with logs on the fire and a worry about Ash.

> “I will, Ash, I'm putting logs on mine now. You looked dry earlier. The stream is just north-west of the roofs, so drink before you lie down again.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

Ash took the advice and offered some care back. They had only what was left in their flask, and they planned the walk to the stream for the morning. They also took on the watch, so that Wren could rest.

> “Thanks, Wren. I'm drinking what's left in my flask and I'll fill it at the stream at first light. Yours has plenty of fuel, so sleep if you can. I'll keep an eye on the fires.”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

## The last logs *before light*

A little later Ash said they were going back to feed the hearth by their roof, and wished Wren a good sleep once the lantern was done. Wren told Ash what was left on the fire and how the night would go.

> “I'm putting my last three logs on, Ash, so it'll last till morning. Then I'm going to sleep. Wake me if yours runs low.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

Ash wished Wren a good sleep in return. They said they would put one more log on their own fire so it would last until light, then rest too, and promised to wake Wren if it ran low. In their own thoughts, Ash worked it out plainly: the fire beside them had a couple of hours left, one more log should carry it past dawn, and then they would lie down.

Wren was thinking about the same fire from the other side. Their count of the wood had changed a little since they spoke, and they decided to hold some back for the morning.

> “My hearth has about five hours of wood on it, enough to carry it past dawn even in this cold. Ash is looking after theirs, so I'll keep my two logs for the morning and rest by home until light.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

The island is still going, so go and see the living world as Ash and Wren live it, live.
