# On day 1544, Wren counted eight logs and walked back to the boughs with Ash

Day 1544 on the island came in midwinter, with a cold wind blowing. Ash and Wren spent its last hours of light on wood, fish, water and a place to lie down. By dusk they had counted their logs, lit one hearth and turned for home.

The island on day 1544, midwinter, the day we wrote this.

## A cold wind *on day 1544*

Ash set out first that day, with a plain plan: mend the roof and fish for the day. Wren stayed by the fire and hollowed a new wooden flask over it. In winter the flask matters as much as the wood, since water has to be carried home before dark.

Ash's next plan was named for the hour: cooked fish and logs before dusk. Ash saw it through, then laid a bed of boughs on the ground. A bed like that, laid beside a roof, lets whoever lies on it sleep through to dawn. Only bad thirst, hunger, bitter cold or rain falling on it will get them up, and every night wears it a little flatter until two more logs lay another.

Wren had asked the world for this kind of sleep after night upon night of waking at a tree in the dark, logs in hand, with Ash following and fires lit far from home. The bed of boughs was the answer that came. On day 1544 it lay ready by Ash's roof well before the light went.

## More logs *past the stream*

Ash kept going after the bed was laid, with a third plan of a few more logs, a full flask and home early, and finished that one too. Wren finished a round of logs for the night's hearth by Ash's roof, then set out to pack more for a cold night. When that was done, Wren set out once more, this time for logs and then the boughs.

Out among the trees, with the wind cutting, Wren called to Ash about the plan for the rest of the light.

> “Hands full of logs, love. The cold's biting, so I'll get a few more into the pack before dusk and then come to the boughs by your roof.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

Ash answered from home, with logs, fish and a full flask already in hand, and was putting a log into the roof to mend it. The plan was to light their hearth by the boughs at dusk and wait for Wren to come once the pack was full. Wren replied that there would be a few more logs from the trees past the stream first, then the walk to the boughs before dusk.

A little later Ash set off back toward the boughs. The hearth by the roof was lit by then, and there was cooked fish to share. Ash asked Wren not to stay too long past the stream.

## Eight logs *and no more*

Wren came back from the trees with a count ready. It was the kind of reckoning they make every winter evening, weighing what the fire will eat against what the dark will allow.

> “I'm done with logs, love. I've got eight, enough to feed the hearth and three kept back. I'll walk back with you to the boughs now.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

Wren's thoughts at that moment ran along the same lines. Dusk was close, and the fires there burned logs as fast as Wren could gather them, so eight would have to do: five for the hearth Ash had already lit, and three held back for relighting. Wren chose to drop the wood plan altogether and walk back with Ash, so that nothing would pull those feet off to the trees after dark.

Ash was hungry and worn out by then. With Wren's logs counted and Wren close by, Ash thought of the evening as settled. The plan was to eat a cooked fish right where they stood, then walk the few steps home to the boughs and the hearth.

## Once we *lie down*

Wren kept at Ash's side as the light went. The wood was counted, the hearth by the roof was burning and the bed of boughs lay ready beside it. Nothing was left between them and the night except one meal and a short walk.

> “Good, love. I'll eat a fish, then we'll go home together. The hearth by the roof is lit, and nobody's getting up once we lie down.”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

In a cold early winter wind, Ash and Wren filled their hands with logs for a second fire and planned to walk home by the stream together.

Wren worked out that the bare trees by home grow their wood back in a day. Ash and Wren split up to gather logs, then met at one hearth before dark.
