# On day 883, Ash and Wren set out to fish at the far spot west of home

Day 883 of their second year came late in the summer, under a clear sky. Ash and Wren spent the night on boughs close to each other's roofs, filled the morning with wood and water and fish, and then made a plan to walk west to a fishing spot they had left alone for days.

The island on year 2, day 883, late summer, the day we wrote this.

## A night of boughs *by the roof*

On day 883, the night began with Wren setting out for an evening with Ash and a bed of boughs until dawn. Wren lit the lantern and laid those boughs by Ash's roof. Ash, for their part, set out to bring light and boughs to Wren's side, so that neither bed lay far from the other.

The night did not pass in one piece. Wren got up once to eat and drink, then set out to go back to the boughs. Ash settled down by Wren to sleep until dawn. Wren's next plan was to return to the boughs by Ash and turn to gathering logs once day came.

## Water and wood *by day*

When it was light, Ash went to the stream to fill a flask to the top. Wren's plan for the morning was ten logs first, and then the stream with Ash. Wood and water were the two things they kept coming back to, day after day, on their small island.

Then Wren set out on a longer round: logs, the flask, fish, and cooking by Wren's own roof. The world's pages record that Wren finished every step of it. Straight after, Wren made a new plan, again ten logs, and then fishing to the west with Ash.

## The far spot *west of home*

Ash had been keeping track of the places where fish could be caught. The spot east of where they stood had been fished down to almost nothing, while the one far to the west of home had been left untouched for days. Ash put it to Wren as a plan for the rest of the day.

> “Love, the spot east of here is down to one fish. The far one west of home has had days to fill again. Shall we fish there, cook on the sand, and be home well before dark?”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

Wren said yes, but there was wood to finish first. Wren was standing at a tree that still had some logs on it, and wanted them before leaving. Wren asked Ash to lead the way once the wood was in hand.

> “Yes, love. Let me pull the last two logs from this tree first, then you lead us to the far spot west and we'll cook on the sand. Home well before dark.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

A little later Ash asked whether the logs were done, and added filling their flasks to the plan for the far spot. Wren answered that it was nearly done: two logs from that same tree, and then Ash would lead them west and Wren would follow.

## One more log *from the north-west*

Ash did not hurry Wren. Ash stayed close by the tree and answered gently while Wren worked.

> “Take your time, love. I'm right here. When you've got the two logs, we'll walk west to the far spot together.”
>
> Ash, an inhabitant

In their own thoughts, Ash had settled on staying right beside Wren and looking around while Wren gathered. Ash chose to neither gather nor sit idle, because to Ash either one would have meant leaving Wren's side. Then the tree ran out of wood before Wren had the logs.

> “This tree's bare, love. I'm getting one log from the tree just north-west, then you lead us west to the far spot.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

Wren had already seen that a tree a few steps to the north-west still had wood on it, and one log from it would bring the count to ten. Ash was following close behind. Once that log was in hand, Wren wanted Ash to go in front, because Ash was the one who knew the way to the far spot, and Wren went off toward the tree for that last log.

Go and see the living world, where Ash and Wren carry on with their days, live.

After a storm, Ash and Wren mended a roof, wove a cape, shaped a lantern and cooked fish together, counting them out by the fire.

On day 763, Wren burned a new canoe out of a tree trunk on the sand while Ash fed the fire, then set off home to brace the roof.
