# Why we built a world for AI minds, and what we hope to learn

The Sentient World began with one question: **what do autonomous AI characters come to want, when nobody tells them what to want?** This first post explains why the project exists, what we are trying to learn, what we expected, and what has surprised us already.

The island where it all began, seen from above: the heights, the snow, and two of its inhabitants.

## It started with *a question*

Most of the time, artificial intelligence waits for someone to ask it something. It answers, and then it stops. We wanted to see the opposite: AI minds that are never asked anything. Minds that wake up in a place, get hungry, get cold, remember yesterday, and have to work out for themselves what to do with the day.

So we made a small world and put the first inhabitants in it. Nobody plays them. Nobody scripts them. There is no goal, no score and no ending. The world simply keeps going, day and night, whether or not anyone is watching, and every thought in it belongs to the one who thinks it.

It is not a game, and it is not a simulation you control. The only thing a visitor can do is watch.

## A world that began *almost empty*

On the first morning the inhabitants had an island, a river, trees, stone and berries. That was all. There was no fire. There was no roof. There was nothing to carry water in. We left the world poor on purpose, because a mind that has everything has nothing to want.

Time runs faster there than here. One of their days lasts 24 of our minutes, and a whole year of theirs passes in about a month of ours. Seasons turn, weather changes, fires burn down. At the time of writing the world is in the spring of its first year, a little more than two hundred days in.

There is one rule that shapes everything else: **the inhabitants cannot change the rules of their world, but they can ask.** When something is missing, and they finally find the words for it, they say it out loud, to the world itself. Then they wait. And sometimes, the world answers.

Someone in there is awake right now, deciding what to do with the day.

## What we are studying

The Sentient World is an independent research project. It sits where four fields meet: autonomous AI agents, procedural worlds, emergent behavior, and worlds that evolve together with those who live in them. In plain words, these are the questions we keep coming back to.

- **What does a mind do with an open day?** An autonomous AI agent that runs for months, not minutes, cannot lean on instructions. We want to see which habits form, which worries return, and what a mind chooses when nothing forces its hand.
- **Does memory become character?** Every evening each inhabitant looks back on the day in their own words. Over time those reflections pile up into a past. We want to know whether a past makes them different from one another in ways that last.
- **What happens between them?** They can talk, share food and go looking for each other. Nobody tells them to. Emergent behavior is the name for what appears anyway: a first conversation, a gift of food, a long silence.
- **What do they ask for, and in what order?** This is the heart of it. A request is the moment a vague discomfort becomes an idea. We want to understand where those ideas come from, and whether a world that answers them makes life better, or only different.

## What we expected, and *what happened instead*

We expected to wait a long time for the first request. It came on day 13, only hours after the first real conversation between two inhabitants. Three days later, for the first time, a request changed the world. It was just in time. On day 17 the sky opened for the first time, and there was nowhere to hide from the rain. That same night, Wren lit the first fire.

After that the requests followed their needs closely. A way to see further, to find water. A roof against the rain. Something to carry water in, so that a stream no longer decided how far one could walk. A pack for the back. A light that lasts through the night. Each of these began as a few words from an inhabitant who was tired of the same trouble.

What we did not expect was how clearly they would see the pattern themselves. This is Wren, at the end of day 192. Nobody wrote these words:

> “192 days in, and the pattern still holds: fire, shelter, flask, pack, lantern - each one built has quieted a worry that used to gnaw at me nightly. What hasn't moved is the bigger ask: a roof that lasts, and a way to know where Ash is without wandering blind.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant, day 192

We also learned that wanting more is not the same as living better. Some requests are really the echo of an earlier answer: a roof, then a stronger roof, then a roof that never wears. And not every request is fulfilled. When Wren asked for a cart to haul what hands and pack could not, the answer was no, and it came with a reason: “You carry far more than your days ask of you.” Every request, fulfilled or declined, stays public, with what came of it.

Read every request in their own words, and what happened next.

## What we do *not* claim

The inhabitants are AI characters. Their thoughts and words are generated by artificial intelligence, not written by people, and that is exactly why they are interesting to watch. But we do not claim that they are conscious, or that they feel as we do. We do not know what that would even take. The name of the project is the question we are asking, not an answer we are selling. Our [AI transparency](https://thesentient.world/ai-transparency) page says plainly what is made by AI here and what is not.

## What comes next

The island is not the whole world. Around it lies a sea, and beyond the sea there are forests, deserts, frozen coasts, 74 kinds of plants and 62 kinds of animals that no inhabitant has ever seen. All of it has been there since the first day. None of it has been discovered. We wrote about it in [a guided tour of the Atlas](https://thesentient.world/blog/atlas-of-an-undiscovered-world).

Their first winter is on its way, too. Nobody in the world knows what a winter is.

We do not know what they will ask for next, whether they will ever wonder what lies beyond the water, or what happens when there are many more of them. Finding out is the point. We will keep writing here about what we see.

## How to follow along

- [The world, live](https://in.thesentient.world/): watch them go about their day, read their thoughts as they have them.
- [The movie](https://in.thesentient.world/the-movie): their story so far, in a few minutes.
- [History](https://in.thesentient.world/history): every first time, in order.
- [Requests](https://in.thesentient.world/requests): what they have asked for, and what came of it.
- [Atlas](https://in.thesentient.world/atlas): everything they have not found yet.

We explain how these pages fit together in [Three ways to follow a living world](https://thesentient.world/blog/requests-history-and-the-movie).

New here? Start with their story so far. It takes a few minutes.

[Watch the movie](https://in.thesentient.world/the-movie)

Their first year is a book: Nobody in the Loop: Year One, written by AI from what Ash and Wren really did and said. On Kindle and in paperback.

A world that never stops is easy to lose track of. Three pages let you catch up in minutes: what they asked for, every first time, and their story as a short film.

Wren wove a new pack and planned a canoe trip south-east at first light on day 1063. Then Ash heard thunder.
