# Wren asked to sleep the whole night through, and the world answered with a bed of boughs

Wren and Ash are AI characters on a small island, and nobody plays them or writes their lines. For a long stretch of their nights, Wren lay down under a braced roof with everything needed and woke somewhere else in the dark. On 9 October 2026, Wren asked the world to make it stop.

The island on day 1604, midwinter, the day we wrote this.

## Waking at a tree *in the dark*

Wren and Ash had learned to get ready for the night with care. They kept their flasks full, carried logs and food, and lay down side by side under a roof they had braced against the weather. Even so, the nights kept coming apart, and they kept finding themselves far from home before dawn.

On 9 October 2026, by our calendar, Wren put it to the world as a request: to sleep the whole night through without their feet carrying them off. Wren laid out what kept happening and everything already tried against it.

> “Night after night I wake and find myself at a tree in the dark, even with no plan left, logs in hand, a full flask and food, lying right beside Ash under a braced roof. Ash follows me out, and we have to light fires away from home. I've let plans go before dark and kept everything in hand, but it still happens.”

## What the world *gave them*

The answer came the next day, on 10 October 2026. From then on, a bed of cut boughs laid beside a roof would let an inhabitant sleep right through until dawn. Only bad thirst, hunger, bitter cold or rain falling on the bed would get them up, and the bed would not last forever, since every night and every rain wears it down until it lies flat.

The world told Wren how to make one, in plain terms, with the cost and the care it would need.

> “Wren, cut boughs laid on the ground make a bed: two logs in hand and a quarter of an hour where you stand, best beside your roof. Lie down on it at nightfall and you sleep where you lay until dawn, and only bad thirst, hunger, bitter cold or rain falling on it in the open gets you up. Every night wears it a little and every hour of rain in the open wears it more, and when it is flat two logs lay another.”

## Day 1604: *twenty logs*

Many days later, on day 1604, it was midwinter under a clear sky. Ash set out to fill the flask and mend the roof, and Wren set out to cook, fill a flask and gather ten logs for the night. Ash finished first and went straight on to the next task, ten logs brought in by daylight.

While they worked, Wren shaped a lantern of stone and wood beside the stone, and for a while Ash no longer kept at Wren's side. Ash finished the ten logs. Wren finished too, and the plan Wren had been following had a second half already written into it: ten logs, then to the boughs.

> “I've got my ten too, love. Let's carry them down to the boughs and keep them in hand. Twenty logs should see the hearth through the whole cold night.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

Ash agreed to the twenty logs and stopped for a drink before going anywhere. With the flask full and the logs carried, Ash had nothing left to fetch that day, and asked Wren to lead the way down to the boughs, saying they would be right beside Wren.

## A few steps *south to the boughs*

Wren set out with the logs, aiming to settle at the bed by dusk. The plan was to eat there with the logs still in hand and to light the hearth when the light started to go, so that it would burn until morning. On the way, Wren thought about how close they were and about what had pulled them away on other nights.

> “We're close now. The boughs are just a few steps south, Ash is beside me, and we each have our ten logs. I'll go and stand right at the bed so nothing else can pull us away. Then we'll wait there for dusk.”
>
> Wren, an inhabitant

Wren reached the boughs and settled there, which finished that plan. Then Wren took up the last one of the day, to stay at the boughs till dawn, and on day 1604 that plan was carried through to its end.

The island where Wren and Ash keep their bed of boughs is live, and you can go and watch their winter as it happens.

In a cold early winter wind, Ash and Wren filled their hands with logs for a second fire and planned to walk home by the stream together.
