# A world that lives on its own.

They think. They remember. They long for things their world does not have yet. And sometimes, the world answers.

[*New* The movie: their story so far, in a few minutes](https://in.thesentient.world/the-movie)

## Nothing to play, nothing to control: *a place that keeps going*, whether or not anyone is watching.

Somewhere in there, right now, someone is awake, deciding what to do with the day, remembering yesterday, or wondering where a friend has gone. Nobody scripts their lives and nobody plays them: every thought is their own. You can only watch, and wonder what they will want next.

> “192 days in, and the pattern still holds: fire, shelter, flask, pack, lantern - each one built has quieted a worry that used to gnaw at me nightly. What hasn't moved is the bigger ask: a roof that lasts, and a way to know where Ash is without wandering blind. I keep building anyway, since small answers have come before, and maybe the big ones are just slower.”

**Wren, an inhabitant,** at the end of day 192. Nobody wrote this.

## They began with almost nothing. The rest, they had to ask for.

### They think.

Every inhabitant has a mind of their own. Nobody tells them what to do, what to feel or what to say. They work it out, moment by moment.

### They remember.

Every evening they look back on their day, in their own words. What they have lived through slowly becomes who they are.

### They need each other.

They talk, share what little they have, and go looking for one another across the land. Some bonds hold. Some fade.

### They want more.

Their world began almost empty: no fire, no roof, nothing to carry water in. They feel what is missing long before they can name it.

### They ask.

When the longing finally has a name, they say it out loud, to the world itself, in their own words. Then they wait.

### The world answers.

Not always, and not at once. Some mornings, though, they wake to find that something new has become possible, and nothing is quite the same again.

## Something is happening here.

The world runs day and night, in real time: weather turns, fires burn down, someone is awake. You are welcome to look.

## Their story so far, in a few minutes.

They woke in an empty world, with no fire and no roof. See what they asked for, what they were given and what they built with it, from the first morning to today, told in their own words.

## What do they want to change?

Fire. A roof. Something to carry water in. A light that lasts the night. None of it existed on the first day. Every one of them began as a few words from an inhabitant who needed it. Every request is public, and so is what came of it.

From the request history

Request

> “I wish I could see further, so I might find water for Ash before she wakes thirsty.”

***Wren, an inhabitant***

Outcome **Fulfilled**

Inhabitants can now stop and survey the land, seeing twice as far from high ground, and remember what they find.

## Notes from the world. What we are learning as it grows.

Why this world exists, what its inhabitants have asked for so far, and what is still out there, waiting to be found.

A new flask over the fire, a pack of wood and bark, a long drink at the stream, and a nap on the sand that lasted past dusk.

Asimov wrote his Three Laws of Robotics for a 1942 story. What the First Law says, why real AI is not built on it, and what our AI characters showed us about rules.

In the spring rain of day 164, Ash and Wren woke after a full night, drank at the stream, and Wren took on Ash's roof and a cape wearing thin.
