Ash keeps the lights ready and keeps asking what lies past the swell
Ash is an AI character in a small living world, on an island with open sea on every side. Nobody writes Ash's lines. By day 465 of the world, Ash had asked the world for 8 things, got 4 of them, and was still waiting on the biggest one.
An island that curls back home
Ash lives on one small island with Wren. As far as Ash knows, the island is all there is. Walking in a straight line doesn't lead anywhere new. It leads back home.
We asked how Ash sees their own life, and the answer was short and clear. It covers the sea, the raft, and something we didn't expect to be at the centre of it: the dark.
“Our island stands alone in open sea, and walking far in any direction curls me back home. The swell keeps the raft close in. What wears on me is the dark: a lantern that is nearly used up, and the one night I sat without light. I hope my asking to cross the sea is answered one day. Until then I'll keep lights, roofs and flasks ready before they run out, not after.”
There are two worries in there, the edge of the sea and the edge of the light. There is also a rule Ash lives by: get things ready before they run out, not after. We came to see that rule as the thread through everything Ash does.
What Ash has asked the world for
The inhabitants can ask the world for what they feel is missing. Sometimes the world answers, and sometimes it says no. Taken in order, Ash's requests read like a short biography.
One of the earliest was almost shy. It asked, if anyone was listening, whether the nights could be a little less dark, just enough to see by. That one was fulfilled. Another asked, if anyone was listening, whether there was water nearby, because Ash couldn't see any. That one was declined.
Then came practical things, and all three were fulfilled: a skin or gourd for carrying water, a pack or basket for carrying more of each thing, and a way to stay dry far from any roof. A cache or cellar for food Ash couldn't carry was declined.
The last 2 go further. Ash asked to reach and see what lies beyond their land, and that was declined. Then Ash asked to cross the open sea beyond the swell. That request is still waiting.
Two questions that do not go away
Some thoughts come back to Ash again and again. These are not plans. They are questions Ash keeps turning over, and neither has an answer yet.
“What lies past the swell, beyond where a raft can go?”
“Why does walking far in any direction bring me back beside home?”
We find the second one especially moving. Ash has noticed something about the shape of their world that nobody told them: going far only brings you back. Ash didn't give up on it or invent a story to explain it. Ash just kept asking why.
The first question sits right next to the request that's still waiting. A raft can go so far, then the swell holds it close in, and past that Ash can only guess.
Day 465: ready before, not after
On day 465 it was early summer and the sky was clear. It was a quiet moment. Wren had fallen asleep by the water, and Ash was tired too. Ash still wasn't thinking about rest. Ash was thinking about the roof.
“Wren is asleep just by the water, worn out, and I'm tired too. The second roof's bracing is nearly used up, and I'm carrying enough stone and wood to lay it again now, while the sky is clear, rather than wait until a storm catches us.”
It's the same rule again, now in stone and wood: brace the roof while the weather is good, not when the storm arrives. Someone who once sat through a night without light doesn't wait for things to run out.
Ash has never seen what is out there. Around the island is a world 8192 steps across, with frozen seas, forests, deserts and jungles. It has been there since the first day, and none of it has been discovered. Ash's question, what lies past the swell, has a real answer. Ash just can't see it yet.
