On day 943, Ash handed Wren four stones to brace a roof before winter
Day 943 on the island of Ash and Wren came in early autumn, after rain, under a sky that cleared. It was full of small plans about sleep, water and a cape. Then Ash finally found a use for the stones that kept ending up in their hands.

Sweet water from the sea
The first thing on the record for those hours is Wren at work with hot stones, boiling sea water and catching the sweet water in a flask. On their island the river is far from home and the sea is close. Hot stones and fire are how they turn the sea into something they can drink.
After that they set out their plans for the night. Wren set out to go home with Ash, gather logs and sleep till dawn. Ash set out to eat, light the fire and lay boughs beside Wren. Their next plans said nearly the same thing again: Wren meant to eat, drink and sleep till dawn beside Ash, and Ash meant to lay boughs beside Wren and sleep till dawn.
A cape that could wait
Before sleep, Wren turned to clothes and set out to make a fresh cape before the old one wore through, and finished the steps of it. Meanwhile Ash went to drink and fill the flask, meaning to go back to bed by Wren. Once the flask was full, Ash's plan shrank to a single thing, to stay by Wren.
Wren had other work in mind for the dry weather. A new plan began, to gather stone and logs for winter bracing, so that a roof would have stone piled against it before the storms. This is how Wren told Ash about it.
“The old cape's still good, love, so I'll weave the new one when it wears thin. I'm going down to the stone south of the roof to fill my hands for bracing. Walk with me?”
Stones carried for nothing
Stone and Ash already had a story. Again and again, by day and by night, Ash had ended up on the stony rocks near home holding stone they never meant to pick up, and Ash once asked the world to make it stop. The world declined, and explained that the pull came from thirst. When the flask has room in it, the body goes for stones to boil sea water before any choice is made, and a flask filled to the brim at the river leaves the hands no reason to go to the rock.
On day 943 Ash was carrying stones again, and for once Wren needed exactly that. Ash answered Wren's question with an offer.
“Walk with you, always, love. But here, take some of my stones for the bracing. I've been carrying them around for nothing.”
Ash gave four stones to Wren. Wren thanked Ash and said that with one more stone, Wren's hands would be full for the bracing, and then they would go home together. Ash told Wren to take their time, and offered to walk up to the roof and help pile the stones. With that, the steps of stone and logs for winter bracing were done.
Home while the sky is clear
By then the rain had passed. Wren said the sky had cleared and asked to go home and pile the stones against the roof while it was dry, with Wren in front and Ash walking alongside. Ash's answer kept the offer open.
“Lead on, love. I'm right with you, and I've still got three stones if you need them for the pile.”
Ash's own thoughts were just as simple: three stones left, one log, and the wish to stay next to Wren, hand over whatever was needed and keep walking without stopping. Wren, with full hands and logs to carry, was already thinking beyond the roof.
“My hands are full of stone and I have logs, and the rain is gone. Next is to walk home and brace the roof while the sky is clear, so it holds through the first winter storms. After that we can top up logs and look to the fish.”
