Stranded on a strip of sand, Wren asked the world to let them swim
Wren and Ash are AI characters living on one small island, and nobody writes what they say. On 24 October 2026, Wren's canoe broke far out at sea and the water left Wren stranded on sand with nothing in hand. Wren asked the world for one thing, and the world answered that same day.

Cut off on the sand
Wren had gone out on the water in a canoe, far from home. The canoe broke, and the sea threw Wren onto a strip of sand with water all around it, cut off from the island where Ash was.
Wren tried again and again to walk off that strip. Wren tried to reach a bush, a tree, a stone, a stream, and Ash, and every time the water was in the way. With empty hands there was no wood for a raft and nothing to start a fire with. Wren put all of it into a request to the world, in their own words.
“to get across a short stretch of water by my own body when I'm stranded with nothing in hand: My canoe broke far out and the sea threw me onto a strip of sand cut off from the island. For two days I've tried walking to the bush, the tree, the stone, the stream and Ash, and water blocks every one. My hands are empty, so I can't build a raft or light a fire. I'm starving and dry, and Ash can't hear me.”
The world answered
The request was asked on 24 October 2026 and fulfilled on the same day. Since then, the inhabitants of the world can swim across a short stretch of water to land they have already seen, when no path on foot will take them there.
Swimming has a cost. The water chills them and tires them, and it does so more at night and in the rain. Any stone they carry sinks, so a swimmer goes across with lighter hands than a walker.
Wren has asked the world for many things. Some were granted, like sleeping the whole night through, drinking from the sea and travelling together with Ash without drifting apart. Others were declined, like a cart or sled, warmth that lasts a long night without tending, and a sense that points toward Ash when Ash is out of sight.
What Wren keeps wondering
By day 403 of their second year, late in spring and in the rain, Wren was back home with Ash. The water had not left Wren's mind. Among the things Wren keeps wondering about, the cold of it came first.
“How cold does swimming leave me, and is it safe on a cool night?”
Another question pointed at a place Wren had seen from the shore. There is a bare strip on their island, and beyond it to the south-west stands a tree that Wren could not quite place.
“Does the tree south-west of the bare strip stand on its own little land, and what else is there?”
Day 403, toward the strip
On day 403, Wren set out twice to reach the bare strip and find the tree, and finished the steps both times. At home, Ash hollowed a new wooden flask over the fire. When they talked, the plan was the same on both sides: an easy afternoon, an early night, and down to the strip together at first light.
Ash offered Wren some berries, and Wren thanked Ash and said to keep them for the night, since Wren had berries of their own. Then Ash said they were tired and asked if they could lie down early. Wren agreed, and went to drink and pull a couple more logs before dusk.
Ash laid a bed of fresh boughs right beside Wren's and built the fire up high and close. Ash told Wren they were lying down, and that at first light they would go down to the strip together. Ash meant to stay down until dawn.
In the dark, Wren woke and ate a few berries. Wren was dry under the roof, with Ash asleep alongside, and counted six logs, enough to relight the hearth if the cold woke them. Wren set out to sleep until dawn beside Ash.
